DoorDash is an on-demand restaurant delivery app through which users place an order for food from their favorite restaurants in just a few clicks, and a delivery person (a “dasher”) hand-delivers it to their doorstep.

With DoorDash, founders Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang and Evan Charles Moore have taken their passion project from the dorms of Stanford in 2013 to arguably the fastest growing on-demand delivery service in the United States today. With an ever-growing list of merchants sprawled across hundreds of major locations nationwide, DoorDash boasts an infrastructure that rivals the busiest of business entities and connects the world like never before.

Driving for DoorDash

Drivers (or “Dashers”) are the key in the direct-to-customer delivery service business of DoorDash. They deliver a wide range of food, some of which may require greater handling and transportation care, and they are also DoorDash’s customer-facing unit.

From making a little extra money to just enjoying working for a small budding startup, there are quite a few reasons why people drive for DoorDash. Here are the most popular ones:

Opportunities – Local chains and small restaurants are all allowed to make their products available via DoorDash, creating a perfect opportunity for individuals with some spare time and a good vehicle to earn supplemental income. DoorDash also has performance-based bonus and stock options for their drivers which can work out to a hefty amount of earnings.

DoorDash runs all year round – You may choose to earn extra cash during the busy holiday season when people typically prefer the convenience of ordering in rather than venturing out in the cold. Pick your preferred day, put in the number of hours you want to work and earn up to $25/hr driving for DoorDash.

No car? No problem– DoorDash doesn’t require you to own a car to make deliveries. You are free to use bikes, scooters, motorcycles or even walk. As long as you can commute independently and meet DoorDash driver qualifications, you can be a ‘Dasher’.

Commercial Auto Liability– As a legitimate and responsible service provider, DoorDash offers a generous commercial auto insurance policy with a $1,000,000 limit for third party property damage and/or bodily injuries (pedestrians etc.) and any other losses arising out of an auto accident while making a DoorDash delivery.

Driver protection – A ‘Dasher’ is protected from rude or threatening customers by DoorDash’s employment policy. Any unruly behavior, bodily injury or threat that’s promptly reported back to DoorDash is swiftly and responsibly dealt with in accordance with local laws.

Watch this space as DoorDash expands to nearly 250 centers in the next few months.

Pro Tip: Get your feet wet by working in the downtown area for the first few weeks and stack up a good count of orders. It’s best to save your free rides, sign-up rewards and promotional codes for irregular or long-distance orders to maximize your rewards and income until you get more familiar with the way it all works.

DoorDash Driver Requirements

Here are the requirements to drive for DoorDash:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must have a clean driving record at the time of application – no suspensions, DUI, reckless driving, homicide, assault, or major traffic violations on record in the last 7 years. Speeding tickets and minor violations typically do not affect your candidature
  • Must have a personal auto insurance
  • Deliveries can be made in a car, bike, scooter, motorcycles and even by walking
  • No criminal history – DoorDash hires third-party verification services for background check
  • Must own an iPhone or an Android smartphone

It’s also good to have a cheerful and welcoming personality because dashers represent DoorDash (and the merchants) to the customers. While the interaction might last less than a minute, you’re supposed to make them feel happy, thank them for their patronage and ensure repeat service.

Driving for DoorDash is fun, active and rewarding. With DoorDash, you don’t just deliver food or retail purchase; you deliver convenience and make customers happy.

DoorDash Orientation

Depending on where you’re located, you may be required to complete either an online or an in-person orientation. At this stage, you will learn how to use the Dasher app, fill out a W-9 form to get paid, learn the general guidelines for completing a successful delivery and get a handbook or a printed manual for other rules specific to DoorDash.

Since early 2015, a short presentation on the company outlining a brief history, a short overview of the business model, company policy (Do’s and don’ts) and onboarding process,  is part of orientation.

The last part involves signing a contractor agreement. DoorDash drivers are not full-time employees of the company, and their work is treated as individual contractual entity. This step is vital since you will need to file your own 1099-K or 1099-MISC to account for the correct taxable income even if DoorDash does not provide you the relevant documents above.

You will be required to bring your fully charged smartphone, your driver’s license, and a credit/debit card to the orientation.

Also grab your Red Card, a DoorDash hot bag, a DoorDash tee shirt and other gears on your way out.

How much does a DoorDash driver earn?

The DoorDash website claims drivers can make up to $25/hour, which might be a stretch for most markets. However, you are guaranteed a minimum of $10/hour. In the rare case, you make less than $10/ hour, DoorDash pays the difference. The average pay per order is $5, plus anything you make from tips.

You will always know the guaranteed amount you are set to earn with an order before accepting or rejecting a request. This amount is derived from a variety of factors such as the order size, if you have to place the order in person, traffic condition driving distance, parking and projected wait time.

Payment is transferred via third-party gateways like PayPal or direct electronic deposits. You should see your earnings credited to your account by Wednesday night of the week, but dashers also have the option to withdraw their daily earnings the next day using DailyPay.

That being said, there are 3 expenses you need to keep in mind:

Gas expenses – delivery fee is a flat amount for a radius, so you may end up spending on gas if your delivery locations are quite far or you’re serving a sparsely populated area.

Maintenance – whether you drive a car or ride a bike, you might have to spend some money to fix the wear and tear incurred on your vehicle.

Taxes- Dashers are independent contractors. This means DoorDash does not deduct taxes from your income, and you’re responsible to pay your own taxes in a timely manner. If you make more than $600 from DoorDash in a year, you’ll receive a 1099-MiSC form to report your income.

As incentives, DoorDash drivers are provided two free meals and drinks during the flexible working hours, and a periodic bonus in the form of DoorDash gift cards which can be directly credited to your account online or even transferred to your customer account and can be redeemed as free delivery code for your next DoorDash usage.

During peak times, when there is an increase in demand, DoorDash pays dashers a premium depending on how busy it is. This is called “Busy Pay”, and it encourages dashers to get on the road to make deliveries.

Do DoorDash drivers earn tips?

Tipping DoorDash drivers is optional, and customers are given a default option to tip while completing their transaction through the app.

While many are happy to tip for a good experience, it isn’t the primary source of income for the drivers.

DoorDash charges a flat fee for every order, regardless of the merchant’s relative standing. So a high-end fine-dining place and a food truck could both end up with the same service fee. While the deliverables themselves are kept at the same price point as their in-store counterparts, the flat fee helps pay for the food delivery fleet. At times extra charges or delivery fee might be incurred if ordered online – in accordance with the websites or third-party payment gateways.
