Postmates is expanding, and hiring couriers too!

Delivery people come in two types: drivers or riders.

Drivers handle longer distance trips and use their personal car or truck to complete the delivery. On the other hand, riders use their personal bicycles or mopeds to make short-distance deliveries.

Drivers are more common in cities that are spread out, like LA, and riders are common in cities where the population is large but condensed. Think San Francisco, Chicago, and New York City.

Application & Onboarding

Whether you are interested in riding or driving, the Postmates application process is easy and straightforward.

Applicants must first ensure that they meet the Postmates courier requirements. Missing even one of these requirements can result in a rejected application, so study the list carefully.

  • You must be at least 18 years of age at the time of applying
  • You must have a valid driver’s license for at least one-year prior, at the time of applying.
  • You must own a smartphone to receive orders. If you don’t have one, you can lease one from Postmates.
  • Prior delivery or customer service experience is a plus, but not necessary.
  • Must have a reliable car, truck, bicycle, moped, motorcycle, or other mode of transportation for the drop offs.

If you don’t have a car or bike—or simply don’t want to put miles on your own vehicle—check out Scoot. Scoot is a membership-based scooter rental business that lets you rent scooters short-term.

Using Scoot is simple:  just pick one up and drive it to a Scoot depot near your destination when you’re done with your deliveries. Scoot currently operates in the San Francisco Bay Area but may expand to your city soon.

Postmates Referral Code

Like discussed earlier, Postmates is offering new drivers a lucrative sign-up bonus. This bonus varies city-by-city, so you’ll find out the exact value when you apply. You must make a city-specific number of deliveries within your first 30 days of account approval to receive the bonus.

You have to apply through a “bonus” link and enter a new courier invite code to receive your sign-up bonus. Don’t worry, we’ve supplied both below.

Note on entering the referral code:

If you click the “Apply for Free” OR “” links above, the referral code will automatically be applied to your application at signup, hence making you eligible for the bonus. If you see an email address in the referral code box during the application, leave it there as this is your invite code.

What it does (clicking the link) is it inputs your courier email address ( automatically into the Referral Code box when a visitor clicks the link. Currently, the interface is a little confusing, so you may want to add a note that they will see your email appear in their form, but that it’s totally normal.Postmates Support Representative

You will now be prompted to enter driver-specific details. Have your driver’s license handy because you will need to enter all your information from it in this step.

Step 4 – Home Address

Step 4 450x260

Now, enter your home address. Postmates needs this so it can send you important information, verify who your identitiy, and ensure that you live in an eligible coverage area.

Step 5 – TOC

Step 5 450x264

After entering all your courier information, you must agree to the Postmates terms and conditions. Read these conditions completely and, if you agree with them, hit the next button to move on to the next step.

Step 6 – Background Check

Step 6 450x260

Postmates runs a background check on all new applicants. This is to ensure that you’re eligible to drive for Postmates and do not have a criminal record. Consent to the background check by signing your name.

The background check usually takes just a few days and looks into things like criminal history, driving record, and other things of the sort. Any criminal background (burglary, arson, theft, possession of drugs etc.), or prior driving misdemeanor (road rage, homicide etc.) is enough ground for rejection.

Step 7 – Thank You!

Step 7 450x246

Once you clear the background check, Postmates contacts the potential recruits for an orientation session, in which new drivers are taught all about the company, and how to maximize their time behind the wheel (or handlebars).

Related: Other Postmates Promotions

For couriers in San Francisco Postmates has a Scoot discount with the promo code Scootmate, which waives any membership fee. To become a member, you don’t spend the usual $2/half hour or $18 for the day, going for a flat $10 instead.

You may also apply directly as a driver here. Ongoing promotion for all markets is a $50 two-way credit for every referral that completes a delivery. There is no sign-up bonus included in this.

New customers referred to Postmates with your referral code (like m6mng); you get $10 in Postmates delivery credit each time. While the focus is firmly on new couriers joining the fleet, you can always pass around your promo codes in local bars, stores or restaurants as you deliver.

Drivers receive 100% of the tips (yup!) and a major share of the delivery fee for each transaction, often adding up to $25/hr.

Postmates has a $12/hr minimum earning guarantee (after all commissions are taken by Postmates), which effectively means, if you make less than $12 with deliveries in an hour, Postmates would fill in the gap. The caveat? “100% of delivery requests must be accepted” – a change they brought about fairly recently, which means the offer is void if you reject requests.

Free Lyft and Postmates credits are available for Postmates couriers. So you can enjoy free rides and use credits towards local merchandise by working as a courier.

One thing to remember here is that Postmates pays you only for “effective driving for delivery”. So if you’re waiting for the order to be processed at the store/ restaurant, or waiting to enter a gated community – these are times which are not billable. Delivery fee is only for the distance between the local merchant and consumer.

2Available in San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, or New York only as of now – South Bay and East Bay residents may avail the same if they deliver in San Francisco.

Postmates orientation

Postmates Schedule Icon

Once you get a call for orientation or an email invitation to on-boarding, you’re almost ready to start making deliveries. Here’s what to expect during the on-boarding process.

Note: Their CEO clearly stated in TechCrunch, this is at best a part-time gig, so don’t expect to earn a full-time job salary. By all accounts, the median pay is around $9/hour–but charm your customers for tips and work during busy times to earn more.

Most orientations are held in local Postmates offices. On-boarding usually happens in groups of 5 to 20 couriers and are led by a Postmates Community Manager. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or share prior experience with a similar business model.

It’s important to pick the brain of your Community Manager so that you can get a hang of the business model, learn local know-how, and find ways to maximize Postmates income. Here are a few things to ask about during your orientation:

  • Local coverage – many city limits are not completely covered by Postmates, ask about the coverage zone in your city.
  • Best times to drive – ask when your city is the busiest, so you can maximize deliveries and earn the most tips.
  • Postmates insurance – Postmates has a $1 million in excess liability insurance, including up to $50,000 in medical expenses. For bikers, they have $1 million in general liability.
  • Background check – The background check typically takes 2/4 days – though in certain cases it may take longer if you have some hiccups, or past record issues.
  • Pex card – Postmates will provide you a Pex card (similar to a credit card) to pay for the products you be deliver. If you get a request from a cash-only place, you need to cover it and request reimbursement from Postmates—ask about this process.
  • Deliveries – Secure your delivery in a good carriage box/basket if you’re delivering via bike, motorbike or scooter.
  • Partnerships – Some restaurants have partnership with Postmates, make sure to ask how these work and if you need to do anything special for those deliveries.
  • Differentiation – Unlike ridesharing services like Lyft or Uber where you’re tethered to your home state, Postmates allows you to work anywhere they operate. So, if you moved from Chicago to New York—you’re still in business as a courier.

Postmates Driver FAQ

So, how did Postmates start, anyways?

Co-founders Sam Street, Sean Plaice, and Bastian Lehmann started Postmates as a passion project back in 2011. Instead of building warehouses (think Amazon) to cater to regional demands, Postmates leverages the available inventory of local businesses to service the needs of consumers in that marketplace.

Is there any way to increase my earnings while driving with Postmates?

While delivering food and retail is unlikely to match the earning of driving passengers for a ridesharing company like Uber or Lyft, work smart and you can make the most of your deliveries. Here are a few ways to increase your earnings:

  • Work during ‘Blitz pricing’ hours to make most of surged pricing for deliveries.
  • Utilize the lunch-time rush to get most number of online delivery orders.
  • Target office-spaces – business orders pay better, are traditionally generous with tips, and offers repeat transaction opportunities.
  • Print and carry some promo codes around. At every delivery point, you may gain a few new customers for Postmates, which in turn earns you more credits from two-way referrals.
  • For those who don’t own cars, using bikes, trucks or even sedans from any other private jobs are possible. This is a great earning model for vehicles which are not personally owned.
  • Text customers after delivery and send them recommendations (Google and Yelp are your friends!) based on a prior order. Doing this will make customers more likely to tip you.
