If you’re a loyal Uber user, you’ve probably seen the company throw countless dollars of free ride credit at new users in an attempt to acquire more loyal users of the platform. After using up your first free promo code, you’ve probably also wondered if there were any Uber promo codes for existing users.
Our answer to this question? Well, sort of. We did some research and came up with some bad news, and then a lot of good news.
The bad news
From what we can tell, there are currently no Uber codes for existing users. While they may release one or two codes for a special event, these codes usually expire within a few days and are not available to the public. At this time, credit-granting promo codes are reserved exclusively for new users.
The good news
Even though there are really no Uber promo codes for existing users, there are still a bunch more ways that you can earn credit, even if you have already entered a free coupon code and taken your first trip.
Guide To Uber Promo Codes For Existing Users
In this post, I will outline 5 sure-fire methods that you can use to earn free Uber credit:
- Use a first-time rider Uber promo code
- Download a competitor’s app
- Invite friends with your unique referral link
- Bum a ride from a first time user
- Bonus method – see below
I’ve earned countless dollars in free Uber credit from using the methods below, and you can too.
Don’t believe me? Just take a look at this recent screenshot from my email.
As you can see, these 5 methods clearly work, and well.
Make sure to try all of these methods, and don’t limit yourself to one or two.
Collecting this credit may seem slow at first, but before you know it, you will be the king (or queen) of the backseat!
1. Claim your first free Uber ride credit
The first step in getting free credit is to use your first new user promotional code. As a way to recruit new users, Uber has implemented a referral program that allows new users to get a ride credit that’s used towards their first trip.
This code is entered in the “payment” section of the app, and will automatically be applied. Once you enter the code, there’s nothing left to do but request a ride!
Once a new Uber user enters their first time code then takes a ride, they’re considered an “existing user”. Since there are no longer promo codes for these users, this is where things start to get creative.
2. Try an Uber Competitor
The next best method to earn free credit is to take advantage of another rideshare app’s new user recruitment programs. Like Uber, other rideshare services like Lyft and Sidecar are throwing around hundreds of dollars in free user credit to recruit new riders. This is great for riders, and they should definitely take advantage of these promotions while they last.
Lyft is the world’s second most popular ridesharing app that operates in the exact same way as Uber. While Uber is branded as “professional” Lyft tries to break the mold and be “your friend with a car”.
Lyft is currently giving away millions of dollars through current promotions they are running, but for free ride credit, use the promo code RIDERCOUPON to get up to $50 in ride credit good towards your first rides.
How to Download Lyft
Existing Uber users will find that downloading Lyft is simple, and can be done in five easy steps.
- Download the Lyft app from the App Store, Google Play, or directly from the Lyft.com site.
- Create an account and login.
- After you log in, click “Settings” in the upper left corner of the screen. (It has 3 horizontal lines arranged into a square)
- From there, click the “Payment” button.
- In the box “Add promo code” insert the promo code “RIDERCOUPON” and then click “Apply”. The promo will be applied to your account.
If you have any issues downloading Lyft, see our full writeup and tutorial on Lyft promo codes.
3. Invite Your Friends
Once you’ve claimed all the free ride credit there is to claim, now it’s time to earn by referring friends. Inviting friends to try Uber through the “Give Rides, Get Rides” referral program is probably the most popular and easiest method to get free Uber ride credit.
The concept is simple and easy to understand: You invite a friend to try Uber for the first time by sending them your referral code, and when they take their first ride, you will get a free ride credit applied to your account.
The referral system is pretty cool. It integrates with your phone’s contacts, and allows you to email, text, or post the code to social media outlets. If you farm out your contacts, you will be raking in the free rides in no time!
A few tips for referring friends to Uber:
- Text, email, or share codes on social media
- Print custom referral code flyers to hand out at bars, events, etc..
- DO NOT share these codes on sites like Groupon, or promote them using paid ad platforms such as Facebook or Adsense
Bonus: Customize your referral code
If you want to step your referral game up and increase the likeliness that friends will use your code, customize your Uber invite code before you send it to your friends.
By default, your Uber referral code will likely be something long and hard to remember, so customizing it will make friends remember is easier, and maybe even share it with their friends when the time arises. Harry from The Rideshare Guy has a great tutorial on how to customize the code:
4. Bum a ride with a first-time rider
Another method that I personally use quite often, but doesn’t get enough credit because it’s so dang simple, is to ride with a friend that hasn’t taken their first ride yet. Above, we outlined the fact that you can share your code with them, so take full advantage of this, twice! While it seems very logical, this is a step that is commonly overlooked.
You can share your code with them, get a free credit for the referral, AND get a free ride by hopping in the car. When they’ve taken their first ride, you’ll then get a free credit applied to YOUR account, which you can use on the way back!
This has worked for me time and time again, and I rarely pay for an Uber ride if I am with a large group of people.
What happens when all of your friends have Uber? Well, if that happens, simply move onto one of the other methods that I’ve outlined.
RECAP: Uber Promo Code Not First Ride
To recap, there are currently no outstanding promo codes for existing Uber riders, but there are still many ways to earn free account credit. The methods existing riders can use are:
- Use an Uber promotional code at signup
- Leverage a competitor’s promotions and promo codes
- Invite friends with Uber’s Give Rides Get Rides program
- Sharing a ride with a first-time user
Gathering this credit may seem slow at first glance but before you can know it, you’ll be getting more free rides.
