One of the best things about modern technology is how it has managed to bring people together. Mind-boggling connection speeds, smartphones, and innovative thinking are connecting people in ways we would have never believed possible only a few years ago. Instagram, Snapchat, and even Tinder are just a few examples, but by far the most innovative and useful to you and me is Uber.
What is Uber Taxi?
Launched in San Francisco in 2011, Uber is a cross-platform smartphone and tablet app that brings together people needing a ride, with people who have cars. Originally called Ubercab, the app is deceptively simple to use. You simply download it for free, register, and then you’re good to go. The amazing thing about Uber is not how simple it is, but how it will change your travel arrangements and save you money. It is also incredibly simple to operate when you need a ride.
Let’s take a moment to look at the process in a bit more detail, both what you have to do to use it, and what is going on behind the scenes.
An Overview of The Uber Process
The idea itself, like every other fantastic idea that someone else had is simplicity itself. It uses both the GPS and the WiFi on your phone to locate you. It integrates with Google maps in order to provide the most accurate position it can. At the same time it also holds the locations of all the drivers, and whether they are currently busy so you can see if there is a ride near you, and they can see people who are looking for a car. If that was all it did it would still be genius, but it isn’t.
The app holds your payment details on file so you don’t need to carry cash to get a car. You can even tell it where home is, and where you work in order to make it more streamlined and simple to use.
It would be a lie to say it wasn’t at least a little controversial when it was launched. Black cab drivers were unhappy that they might end up losing business, and a lot of people voiced concerns about how safe it would be to use. They worried that because anyone with a nice enough car and a valid license can register as an Uber driver it would be entirely populated with murderers and rapists. But in reality, that wasn’t a fair concern.
Uber drivers are all subject to a number of background checks before allowing to register, and Uber are insistent that constant feedback from users allows them to ensure any driver that does not meet their standards is removed from the system.
So there’s no reason not to give them a try. Especially when you consider that they often have deals for new users, quite literally giving you a free ride.
Uber Free Ride: How To Get One
Uber wants you to use their app and as such there are opportunities to get a free Uber ride.
The best way to do this is to use free uber codes.
At this time use the code 4YOU and you will get a $20 free credit (codes are subject to change therefore please check prior to use).
Once you enter the free code in the apply code section of the top right and away you go. Don’t worry we will explain how to use the app shortly.
Uber Promo Code Existing Users
If you are an existing Uber customer there are some Uber Hacks that can help to get you a free ride.
The best method to get free credit is to share your code. This is a function in the app that allows you to send free Uber rides to your friends if they sign up using your code.
This is a great way to get more free credit
So you’re in one of the cities where Uber has been rolled out, you’ve got your phone, and you want a lift. The first thing you need to do is go to your app store and download the Uber app. It’s free to get it, and available on Android, iOS, and Windows, so whatever your phone you have no excuse! Our instructions below are a step by step guide to downloading on Google Play
Uber Google Play: How To Install
To install the Uber app on Google Play is very simple.
Go to your Google Play app on your phone or tablet.
Type Uber In the Search Bar
Install the free Uber App
Open the app and register: You can register using your Google Plus details or Facebook Once it is installed, you’ll need to register as a user. For this, you’ll need to give it your personal details, validate your phone, and also register a credit or debit card. This allows you to pay for your ride without having to enter into financial negotiations with the driver. It’s simpler for you, and also for them, no cash ever needs to change hands, and there are no awkward decisions to be made about tips.
At this time you can add your payment details, use a Promo Code( see above ) or add pay with PayPal.
Now you have the app you will be sent a confirmation code and you are ready to go, all you have to do is get your ride.
Open the app, and you’ll see that it has automatically found your phone using a combination of GPS and WiFi. You can either select your current location, or you can move the pin to the point you wish to be collected from. If there are no cars available, it will tell you, but if you are in a built up area this is very unlikely.
If there are cars it will let you know an approximate time until pick up; you’ll even see little cars moving around on the map. Tap the map to select your pick up location, select the level of service you require, and a nearby driver will accept the commission.
There are a number of choices of service:
This is the standard car; they describe it as something like a Toyota Prius. Whatever it is it will be no more than 6 years old, it will have passed a safety check, and will have four doors.
This is a larger car with more room for family and luggage, something like Renault Espace or a Ford Galaxy. Though as you would expect, a bigger car costs a little more money.
The Uber Lux is the highest service they offer. It only uses luxury cars such as the larger, higher spec BMWs, Audis, or Mercedes.
Of course the higher a quality of car you want to ride in, the more you are going to pay, but the pricing is completely transparent, and you can always get a quote for the journey before accepting the ride.
Add your destination to the app, and then you can get an approximate price for the journey.
Below is a free ride calculator so you can work out costs now so you can see how much Uber might save you in taxi fares.
Once your selected ride arrives, just climb in, sit back, and enjoy the journey. You don’t need to worry about cash, the payment is all taken care of through the app, and it really is quite that simple. If you want to tip your driver then you are free to do so, but Uber themselves say
“You don’t need cash when you ride with Uber. Once you arrive at your destination, your fare is automatically charged to your credit card on file — there’s no need to tip.”
Currently Uber is available in London, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle, Liverpool, Bristol, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. Though there are plans to roll it out to more cities in the future.
It really is an incredibly simple concept, with a fantastically complex structure making it work. Why not give it a try?
Benefits of Using Uber
Have you ever found yourself drunk and in need of a taxi home?
Or been staying in a new city not sure where to go and need a friendly service to get you around?
In today’s society it isn’t difficult to use the internet and find local taxi service phone numbers. However, thanks to the internet there are now many more services available without the costliness of standard taxis that run on meters. Introducing UBER, a new application which can be downloaded to your device.
The benefits of UBER far exceed those offered by standard taxi services, not only is it faster and more reliable but also more cost effective. UBER also offers a variety of packages to allow you to choose exactly what model car you travel in.
No Need For Money
The basic principle of the UBER application is that you create a profile that is linked to your bank card, meaning you don’t have to worry about fumbling around for spare change or receiving those pesky charges for paying by card in a taxi. The application then lets you search for cars in the vicinity who are available to take passengers and view the driver’s profiles to see their “rating”. You can then select and request a car, and UBER tells you exactly where your car is and how long it will be until it arrives. This makes planning those pre-drinks a little easier, or making sure you’ll arrive at your meetings in plenty of time as UBER allows you to track your car. This is also great because it means when you receive your E-receipt from your journey you’ll be able to see exactly where you went and the price so you know there are no additional charges.
Standard taxi services all have a minimum base charge of £2.50 before your journey has begun and from then it’s between £5.60-£9.00 per mile (Based on London prices). In comparison to this UBER can be up to 30-50% cheaper with the standard rate per mile being approximately £5 for the standard UBERX cars (Based on London prices. Including base charge). The breakdown provided on the website details a £2.50 base charge, £0.15 per minute, and £1.25 per mile. (https://www.uber.com/cities/london). The UBER application also offers the option to split the fare between you and those you are travelling with who have UBER profile, the cost for each person is split equally by UBER automatically when the option is selected. UBER also allows members the opportunity to earn free fares for themselves and friends through various offers.
Prices vary between the different packages offered by UBER. UBERX is a service offering everyday cars for everyday use and is the cheapest service offered by UBER, UBERBLACK offers you a high end sedan and personal driver at your disposal within minutes, UBERSUV offers larger cars to seat up to 6 people at a time, and UBERLUX offers the ultimate luxury travelling experience boasting of “The finest cars with prices to match”.
This means that they have a service perfect for you no matter what the occasion and are ready to take you wherever you need to go in the fastest time possible at the best possible price.
High Driver Standards
UBER also requires that the cars used by their drivers meet strict specifications laid out by them for example, UBERX requires 4 door cars made after the year 2000. Specifications become stricter depending on the service, however all services are available to anyone regardless of age making it a much more flexible service than other taxi, and more specifically, private hire companies.
Despite it being an unlicensed business, all UBER drivers are all subject to police and CRB checks upon joining the company under their strict protocol. The UBER application itself allows you to rate your driver after your journey and the driver rates you as a passenger; these ratings are seen on each profile. The rating process on the application means that UBER can track and keep record of those whose behaviour and demeanour may not be meeting their high standards and those drivers who are perceived as rude, impolite, clean, or unsafe are no longer granted employment within the company. These requirements mean you will not be subjected to dirty cars, and rude drivers and can enjoy a safe and pleasant journey from and to whichever destination you please.
Simplicity and Utility
All-in-all UBER is a fantastic company, both to work for and be a customer of. They provide high quality cars and professional safe drivers as well as the ability to manage time efficiently and be cost-effective at the same time. UBER’s range of services make it suitable for all no matter what the occasion or who they may be making it one of the best companies to travel with. It allows you to track your route and get home safely while knowing EXACTLY where you have been. It also makes payment easier without having to estimate how much your fare will cost all by the simple payment method integrated within the app. The structure of the application itself is simple and easy to navigate for anyone, even those of us who may not be the best with technology.
Uber Safety: A Guide
There has been a lot of negative press about Uber since its launch in 2011, and it is safe to say that most of it is blown out of all proportion. That being said however there are some things you might want to bear in mind if you’re going to be using Uber. Some of them are the sort of thing you should be thinking about when using any public transport or cab service, and one or two are specific to Uber. Anyway, let’s stop beating about the bush and get straight down to the important stuff.
The first thing you need to bear in mind is that to use the service you have to use your smartphone or tablet. As soon as you get your phone out in public you are at risk of having it snatched, so be aware of your surroundings. It’s a good idea to stop and move to somewhere out of the way. It’s easy to stop concentrating on where you’re going if you’re busy looking at your phone.
If you are using Uber for the first time, then it is going to need you to provide some payment details. Please don’t do this in public. Find a coffee shop, or pub to sit in before you start getting credit cards out. You can probably use their wifi too!
So you’ve safely used your phone to call your Uber driver and your ride pulls up. The first question you need to ask is are you sure this is your car? There are plenty of unlicensed minicabs
and drivers around that will try to steal customers from other, more official organisations. If you have any doubt check your phone, the app will display the make and model of car, the driver’s name and photograph, and the registration plate of the car.
Trust your instincts. Uber drivers all go through a number of background checks to ensure your safety, but if you aren’t happy and don’t know why then you should trust yourself. Just apologise, and select a different car. There might be a small charge for this in order to compensate the driver for his or her time, but your safety should always be your first priority, and if there was something specific that made you want to walk away then you should report this to Uber. They take this sort of thing very seriously and the next person might not be as switched on as you.
If you are comfortable, then go ahead and get in the car. Safety experts recommend that you shouldn’t opt for the front, but to sit in the back of the car. Not only does this put you out of arm’s reach of the driver, but in the event that you need to get out of the car in a hurry you have the choice of two doors, instead of just the one.
Uber have a code of conduct [https://www.uber.com/safety/code-of-conduct] that you should read. It will give you a good idea of what you can expect from your driver. If you feel threatened in any way, or have any reason to believe that your driver may be under the influence of alcohol of drugs then ask them to end the journey immediately and report them via help.uber.com.
When you’re in the car, you should keep conversation on a professional level. Taxi drivers are famous for being chatty, and some Uber drivers are the same. Police recommend that passengers, especially lone females don’t allow the conversation to become anything other than professional. The last thing you want is to give the impression that being overfamiliar is ok. Keep the conversation on everyday matters, and don’t be worried about offending people. No one will mind you were not chatty if they are following the Uber code of conduct.
In March 2009 John Worboys, a licensed black cab driver, was convicted for multiple sexual assaults and rapes committed against female passengers of his cab. He pretended to have recently come into some money and offered the passengers drugged champagne to carry out his crimes.
The simple way to prevent anything like this happening to you is just never to accept
anything to eat or drink from a taxi driver, whether they are a licensed black cab driver like Worboys, or an Uber driver. Again, they won’t mind, and if they do seem to mind remember the code of conduct.
It is always a good idea to have your phone to hand when you are in a car with someone you do not know. You might even want to consider programming the emergency services into you speed dial. The chances of you having to use it are incredibly slim, but as with all of these things, it is better to be prepared in ways you don’t have to act, than to realise too late that you could have prevented something.
Uber are very clear that there is no need to tip your driver. All fees are automatically deducted from the payment method you set up when you created your account. Do not pay cash, and if you are asked to then, you should report your driver.
Once you arrive at your destination, it is very tempting to relax, but those moments when you are on familiar home territory are when you are at your most vulnerable. You switch off because everything is so familiar and residential areas are almost always quieter and less well lit than high streets and busy urban areas. Have your keys ready before you get to the door so you don’t have to stand there fumbling in your bag or pockets outside.
It’s easy to focus on the dangers of using a service like Uber and get scared, but there is no need. If you use a little common sense, and follow some simple guidelines then you won’t have anything to worry about.
So there you have the complete guide to using Uber.
